Chalk and Limestone Soils Wildflower Seeds LW2M 80/20

This mixture of UK native wildflower and grass seeds has been carefully selected as ideal for chalk and limestone soils. Dry soils such as these are not known for being particularly fertile, but they make up for this by supporting some especially striking species, including the soft-looking Scabious and the bold, upright spikes of Sainfoin. Many of these are boisterous blooms and grasses that grow year after year, but their habitat means that they’re easier to control if needed, making them perfect for those who want to mix and match their meadows for the perfect arrangement!

  • This mix contains 23 different flower species and 8 meadow grasses
  • Sowing Rate: 5 grams per sq/m
  • 1kg covers 200sq/m

Sowing Instructions

How to sow wildflower seeds

  • Remove all weeds and debris.
  • If the area has been overtaken by weeds, it is important to reduce the number of weeds in the soil.
  • It may be necessary to allow time for the first flush of weeds to germinate and then remove them before attempting to sow wildflowers.
  • Wildflowers prefer poor soil with low nutrients and if it is practical to do so you could remove any good quality topsoil.
  • Prepare the soil to a fine tilth.
  • Try not to disturb the soil any further as this may bring more weed seeds to the surface.
  • Most wildflower seeds are best sown February to April and late August to October, with the ideal time being autumn. Avoid hot summer months.
  • It is advisable to mix the wildflower seed with a carrier (dry sand) to assist with sowing. This will help in distributing the seed evenly over a large area.
  • Sow pure wildflower mixtures (100%) at a rate of 3g/m2
  • Sow wildflower with grass mixtures at 5 g/m2
  • It should not be necessary to rake the seed over as the light helps germination on many species.

A few weeks after sowing, the seeds will begin to germinate. If you are using a wildflower seed mixture the growth of the different flowers (and grasses if you have them in the mix) will vary, so if grasses start to emerge first there's no need to worry.

  • Annuals will flower the same year if sown during the spring or the previous autumn.
  • Perennial wildflower species will establish during the first year of sowing and flower during the second year.
