What Is an 80/20 Wildflower & Grass Seed Mix?

An 80/20 wildflower and meadow grass seed mix contains 20% wildflowers and 80% meadow grasses, blended to create a balanced, long lasting meadow that reflects natural British habitats.

The 80/20 ratio is widely used because it produces a British wildflower meadow that is both colourful and durable. The grasses form the backbone of the display, adding height, movement, and structure, while allowing wildflowers to appear in waves throughout.

These are not invasive lawn grasses. They are fine meadow grass species that support pollinators and help stabilise the area against wind. All of our wildflower seeds in these mixes are British native and suited to UK soils.

A wildflower and grass seed mix works particularly well for larger areas, naturalised lawns, paddocks, and open spaces where you want a meadow that develops in line with wild grasslands in the countryside.

Where and When Should You Sow an 80/20 Meadow Mix?

For the best results, it is recommended to sow an 80/20 meadow mix in either spring or autumn on cleared, prepared ground that is free from weeds and old turf.

Autumn sowing is often preferred, as cooler temperatures and regular rainfall help seed establish with less competition from fast growing weeds. Spring sowing also works well, typically from March through to May, provided the soil has warmed enough to support germination.

These mixes suit most soil types and are commonly used for paddocks, large lawns, school grounds, community spaces, and countryside projects. Grasses usually germinate first, providing early structure and ground cover, with wildflowers following as temperatures rise.

This staged growth helps the meadow establish quickly and stabilises exposed ground or slopes where erosion might otherwise become a problem.

How Is an 80/20 Mix Different from a 100% Wildflower Mix?

An 80/20 wildflower seed mix contains native meadow grasses alongside wildflowers, while a 100% wildflower mix is made up entirely of flowering species.

The grass content is what gives an 80/20 mix its strength and structure. Once established, grasses help suppress weeds, reduce maintenance needs, and improve resilience on slopes, large areas, or sites with varying soil conditions.

A 100% wildflower mix is better suited to situations where pure colour is the priority or where specific biodiversity targets are being met. However, it requires more careful preparation and ongoing management. An 80/20 mix is often easier for first time meadow growers and more forgiving across wide or paddock style spaces.

The presence of grasses helps maintain balance through the season and keeps the meadow looking consistent year after year.

How much seed do I need per square metre?

Most people use around 5g of seed per square metre for wildflower and grass seed mixes. This provides enough coverage for grasses to establish while leaving space for wildflowers to emerge naturally.

Can I use this mix on an existing lawn?

It is not recommended. Existing grass will outcompete the seed, so the best approach is to remove turf completely and prepare bare soil before sowing.

Will this meadow return every year?

Many species return through self seeding and established perennials. Results vary depending on soil type, cutting method, and how closely the meadow follows a summer cut and clear routine.

Does an 80/20 mix support bees and pollinators?

Yes. The wildflower component provides nectar and pollen throughout the main foraging season, while the grasses help create habitat for insects, birds, and small mammals.

Can I mow the meadow once it is established?

Meadows should be left to grow freely until mid to late summer. After flowering, cut the area down, remove the cuttings, and allow the ground to rest before regrowth begins.

Will I need to water the meadow?

Watering is only required during long dry spells in the first six to eight weeks. Once established, the meadow will cope well with normal UK weather conditions.
